The underlying metholody for the project has been developed by Scion and Sustainable Design Technology (SDT) called the 'Holistic Framework'.

This framework has been developed to deliver clear and strategic information and direction into the product development process, through the effective use of design and scientific process.

The framework leverages off existing and emerging techniques and integrates them into a single framework. These techniques include life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC), quality function deployment (QFD) and other more qualitive design research methods. The key aspect of the holistic framework is that it provides information and research on customer and technical requirements, environmental and contextual factors, and economic and supply chain issues.

It combines the key elements of business, design and science together to creater a greater understanding about the market and how a product functions with consumers and within the market.
